Lensico
An eyecare ecommerce platform focused on colored contact lenses, prescription contact lenses, and eyewear products.
We built native Android and iOS applications, a custom PHP ecommerce platform, and supported growth initiatives that helped scale the business to approximately ₹1 Crore in revenue during its first year of operations.
The Challenge
The online contact lens market is highly visual and competitive. Traditional ecommerce layouts fall short when selling aesthetic products like colored contact lenses because customers are naturally hesitant to buy items that directly affect their facial appearance without previewing them.
In ecommerce, uncertainty is the primary enemy of conversions. Customers struggled to gauge how particular colored lenses would blend with their natural eye color, leading to high cart abandonment rates and purchase hesitation.
The core challenge was to construct a digital shopping journey that reduced purchase friction, built customer confidence, and simplified complex prescription entries across both web and mobile channels.
The Solution
To address these operational hurdles, a unified digital ecosystem was engineered consisting of native iOS and Android apps alongside a custom PHP web backend. The platforms shared a centralized inventory and order management system.
Virtual Lens Try-On
The primary feature was an interactive visual module. Customers could capture a live selfie or upload an existing photo from their camera roll to preview colored contact lenses directly on their face before purchasing. By overlaying the lens colors on the customer's eyes using smart image masking, we removed the visual uncertainty of online lens shopping, significantly accelerating purchase decisions.
Key Features
Virtual Lens Try-On
Computer vision overlay system allowing customers to upload or capture a selfie and preview colored contact lenses directly on their iris in real time.
Prescription Ordering
Standardized optical prescription parameter forms (Spherical, Cylinder, Axis, Base Curve, Diameter) validating values to eliminate customer ordering mistakes.
Colored Lens Catalog
A visual-first product discovery matrix categorized by colors, wear cycles (daily/monthly), and lens parameters for rapid catalog browsing.
Eyewear Management
Dynamic catalog indexing with advanced product variant mappings for managing frames, prescription lenses, and adjacent eyecare accessories.
Mobile Commerce
Fluid native interfaces built for speed and thumb-friendly checkout, optimized for mobile network conditions.
Secure Checkout Flow
Encrypted payment gateway integration supporting leading wallets, cards, and secure custom payment tokens.
Customer Accounts
Integrated profiles for managing past prescriptions, saved shipping addresses, order histories, and quick repeat purchases.
Order Tracking
Automated fulfillment pipelines linking logistics status to customer accounts and sending system notifications.
Technology Stack
Rather than deploying generic off-the-shelf plugins, the platforms required specific custom modules to handle complex prescription details and custom digital rendering logic.
Virtual Try-On & Image Masking
Implemented client-side image processing within the native apps to handle portrait scaling. The system identifies eyes in uploaded photos, applies a circular mask matching standard iris dimensions, overlays the lens color with dynamic opacity levels, and blends it with the natural iris textures using native blending modes.
Prescription Entry Validation
Designed a standardized form matrix for prescription contact lenses. Users can input specific parameters (Power, Base Curve, Cylinder, Axis) separately for each eye. The system checks database availability in real time, preventing users from adding out-of-stock configurations to their carts.
Unified Database & Payment Gateway
Created custom PHP controllers on a MySQL database schema, serving endpoints to the native iOS/Android apps and the web store. Integrations with leading payment gateways secure the processing of multi-currency checkouts.
Business Outcomes
Successfully architected and deployed native Android, native iOS, and custom PHP web platforms, unifying the catalog and checkout databases.
Supported marketing and operational campaigns through growth consulting, helping scale the business to ₹1 Crore in sales during its initial 12 months.
Improved buying confidence and customer conversion rates through interactive virtual lens overlays, solving the primary colored lens conversion bottleneck.
Integrated social media assets and customer outreach plans with app engagement workflows, establishing a consistent brand voice and organic user acquisition.
Key Takeaways
Reducing Purchase Uncertainty: Adding interactive preview features like virtual try-on modules resolves the main customer barrier to buying aesthetic or fitting items online, leading to lower cart abandonment.
Visual-First Commerce: In visual niches (beauty, eyewear, contact lenses), product lists must prioritize high-quality visuals, interactive color pickers, and simple comparison flows rather than relying on heavy text specs.
Mobile-First Architecture: A large majority of visual ecommerce buyers browse via mobile. Building fast native layouts is critical to maintaining high engagement outside of standard high-speed desktop networks.
Synergy of Tech and Marketing: Aligning product development cycles directly with target growth campaigns (like social media outreach) creates an organic customer acquisition loop, driving consistent first-year user growth.
